Julie's Personal Story of Hope and Healing:
When Doing Everything "Right"...Still Wasn't Enough
Hi, I’m Julie.
For the first decade of my career as a dietitian and nutritionist, I was a Type-A overachiever, an avid learner, a natural helper, and a passionate believer that food is one of our most powerful medicines.
I was fortunate to work in several specialty areas of nutrition, but the most meaningful part of my work was always counseling, coaching, consulting, and helping people improve their health.
I loved what I did. Yet even while being recognized for my work, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. Too often, I felt limited in how deeply I could help the people sitting across from me. I wanted to understand why they were struggling – not simply pair a diet with a diagnosis and send them on their way.
But honestly, my conventional training had not given me the tools to do that.
I felt frustrated. Hemmed in.
And increasingly convinced there had to be a more comprehensive way to help people heal.
I knew I was missing an important “toolset.”

That nagging feeling stayed with me for years, and I continued pursuing advanced training and education because I wanted to serve people more deeply.
Then, as I approached 40, it became deeply personal.
My own health began to unravel.
Several years earlier, I had been introduced to Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine, a group of highly trained practitioners who viewed health through a broader, more comprehensive lens. Rather than focusing only on symptoms or diagnoses, they sought to understand the deeper imbalances and root causes contributing to illness.
They looked at the complex connections among nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, lifestyle, environment, and the many systems of the body.
For the first time, I saw practitioners asking the same questions that had been circling in my mind for years:
- Why was this person experiencing these symptoms?
- What was happening beneath the surface?
- What conditions were preventing the body from healing?
- How could we use nutrition to address the underlying drivers of imbalance?
Their approach seemed to hold answers to both my professional questions and my growing personal health concerns.
So I began studying functional and integrative nutrition in every spare moment I had.
And the more I learned…the more I realized how much more there was to understand and uncover.
The “Healthiest Sick Person” I Knew
During this time, my health continued to decline despite doing everything most people associate with being healthy.
- I ate what I believed was the “perfect” diet – whole foods, organic, clean!
- I exercised consistently.
- I practiced yoga.
- I prioritized sleep.
- I took a few supplements.
On the outside, I looked healthy. But inside, I knew something was terribly wrong.
I began experiencing intense anxiety, brain fog, difficulty focusing, fatigue, missed menstrual periods, increasing food intolerances, unexplained weight loss, skin and digestive issues, and more!
My doctors ran standard bloodwork and repeatedly told me that everything looked normal. One even told me I was in “perfect health.”
But I didn’t feel healthy. I secretly began referring to myself as the healthiest sick person I knew.
And honestly…
I was scared.
Maybe you can relate.
Your tests may look normal, and your doctors may tell you you’re “good to go.”
Other people may think you look fine.
But you know your body.
And you know when something isn’t right.
I began using myself as the patient and ordering functional testing in search of answers.
The results stopped me in my tracks.
On the inside, my body was struggling far more than anyone realized.
Over the next year, visits with additional specialists revealed autoimmune issues, thyroid dysfunction, severe iron deficiency, a low white blood cell count, and inflammation.
Meanwhile, the brain fog, acne, anxiety, fatigue, and food reactions continued.
My carefully controlled diet and growing supplement routine were barely keeping me functional.
I was told that I was getting older.
That it was probably stress.
Or that it was simply typical hormonal changes or perimenopause.
But deep down, I KNEW there had to be more to the story….

Finding the Toolset I Had Been Searching For

That experience pushed me to pursue formal training in functional and integrative nutrition and find a practitioner in functional medicine!
I began studying biochemistry, physiology, nutrition science, and the complex relationships among the body’s systems.
Over the next several years, I immersed myself in advanced functional medicine education, completing hundreds of hours of additional training and earning my Certificate of Training in Functional and Integrative Nutrition.
That education changed the way I viewed health.
It also changed the way I viewed myself AND the people I felt led to serve and support.
I gained a deeper understanding of how food, nutrient status, gut health, hormones, immune function, lifestyle, environment, and genetics can influence the way a person feels.
More importantly, I gained greater compassion for anyone who had ever been told:
“Everything looks normal.”
“It’s probably just stress.”
“You may have to learn to live with it.”
During this season, I was also fortunate to find mentors and practitioners who reignited my passion for nutrition and helped me discover the toolset I had been searching for throughout the first chapter of my career.
The pieces were finally coming together.
I was helping clients in more meaningful ways.
I was asking better questions.
I was connecting dots I previously hadn’t known existed.
And I absolutely loved my work again.
My own health, however, remained unpredictable.
Sometimes I improved as I applied what I was learning.
Then, without warning, I would take another tailspin downward.
Yet, for the first time, I had something I desperately needed….
Hope.
I believed I would eventually get to the bottom of what was happening.
And I learned that hope is often where healing begins.
When My Body Finally Said, “Enough”
Despite the progress I was seeing with clients, my own health continued to deteriorate.
- The brain fog became worse.
- My energy was like a rollercoaster – ups and downs.
- My hormones became increasingly imbalanced.
- I continued losing weight.
- Then my digestive system began to fall apart.
I developed gastritis, reflux, SIBO, parasites, significant dysbiosis, intestinal permeability, and extreme food sensitivities.
I will never forget sitting in the waiting area before an endoscopy and desperately wishing the floor would swallow me.
Several of the nurses recognized me as the local nutritionist who specialized in digestive health.
There I was – the practitioner who helped other people with their gut issues – unable to understand why my own body was failing.
I felt embarrassed and humbled.
My protocols were barely keeping me functional, and I couldn’t understand why nothing seemed to hold.
Then another system began to unravel.
My skin.
My face erupted in a painful, hot, inflamed rash. Dermatology couldn’t identify the cause. I replaced my skincare products, simplified everything I could, and followed the most natural and holistic approaches possible.
Eventually, I had to take prednisone simply so I could work and function.
I started to wonder whether I would be able to continue practicing.
But I refused to stop searching.
By then, I knew I was struggling with histamine intolerance and reacting to dozens of foods. My diet became increasingly restrictive, yet even that brought very little relief.
Each morning, I tried to hold myself together.
I placed ice packs on my face.
Applied makeup over the inflammation.
Went to work.
Smiled.
Helped other people.
Then I came home, removed the makeup, and returned to the ice packs and pain.
Meanwhile, my practice was growing.
I was successfully helping others – but privately, I felt like a failure because I couldn’t seem to help myself.
I was approaching rock bottom.
And for the first time, I wasn’t sure I had the strength to fight my way through it.
Finally, an Answer
I did not find the answer alone.
I was supported by my family and friends, my faith, a wonderful functional and integrative physician, skilled holistic practitioners, and experienced colleagues who refused to give up on me.
Eventually, we uncovered a major missing piece:
Mold toxicity.
The ongoing exposure had contributed to a condition known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, or CIRS.
My body had become highly reactive, inflamed, and increasingly unable to tolerate foods, products, and environments that had never bothered me before.
We discovered that my initial mold exposure had likely occurred a year earlier in an office building I was renting. Testing later revealed another source within my home: a crack in an exterior wall had allowed moisture intrusion and mold growth.
Suddenly, so many disconnected symptoms began to make sense.
- The gut issues.
- The hormonal imbalances.
- The immune dysfunction.
- The brain fog.
- The anxiety.
- The skin reactions.
- The severe food sensitivities.
- The exhaustion.
I finally had an explanation.
More importantly, I had a direction.

Healing One Layer at a Time
I truly believe that even the most difficult seasons of our lives can hold purpose and lead to something profound.
I would never wish that health crisis on anyone. But in hindsight, it became one of the greatest teachers of my life. It deepened my understanding of mold illness, chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, immune dysregulation, unexplained symptoms, and the many ways one imbalance can affect the entire body.
It also reminded me that discovering the root cause of a chronic health condition often requires time, persistence, curiosity, and collaboration.
I frequently tell clients that healing can be like peeling an onion.
You address one layer…
And then another layer is revealed.
That does not mean you’ve failed.
It may simply mean your body is finally ready to show you what needs attention next.
Once we identified mold as a major root cause, my healing journey still took nearly 16 months.
It required removing the exposure, remediating my environment, supporting detoxification, rebuilding my gut, restoring depleted nutrients, supporting my immune and hormonal systems, and slowly helping my body regain resilience.
There was no single miracle supplement.
No one perfect protocol or diet.
No overnight transformation.
Healing happened gradually – one layer and one intentional step at a time.
That experience changed both my life and my career.
Functional and integrative nutrition didn’t just change my health.
It changed my life.
It restored my hope.
It helped me reclaim my health.
And it taught me to become the practitioner I had always wanted to be.
Our stories, past and present, have so much to do with our health.
That is why I take the time to understand each client’s story rather than focusing only on symptoms, test results, or a diagnosis.
Every person brings a unique combination of biology, genetics, nutrition, environment, lifestyle, experiences, and stressors.
You are not a diagnosis.
You are not a set of lab values or a standardized protocol.
You are a whole person with a story.
And I believe your story matters.
My own struggles made it clear that helping people with chronic digestive symptoms, autoimmune conditions, and complex health concerns would become the heart of my practice.
Conventional medicine offers many lifesaving and essential tools, and I deeply value collaborative care.
But in my own case, the conventional model alone was not able to explain why I was becoming increasingly unwell nor help me.
I needed someone to look deeper.
To ask different questions.
To connect the seemingly unrelated pieces.
That is what I now strive to do for every person I have the honor of supporting!
At that point, I believed I had finally uncovered the missing pieces.
I had addressed the mold.
I had restored my gut.
I had rebuilt my body.
I thought my healing journey was complete.
I was wrong…

But My Story Didn't End There...

The Missing Piece That Changed Everything
Understanding that mold toxicity was a major “root cause” behind my chronic health issues was life changing.
Removing the exposure, remediating my home, healing my gut, supporting my immune system, rebalancing my hormones, and restoring my body’s resilience helped me regain nearly 70–80% of my health.
It changed both my life…and the way I practiced functional, whole-body nutrition.
But something still wasn’t quite right.
The crushing fatigue was gone, the severe gut issues had improved, and I was functioning again…quite well.
Yet I still experienced lingering anxiety, some brain fog, difficulty focusing, and periods of fatigue.
Nothing debilitating – just enough to keep me from feeling fully alive.
(Maybe you’ve experienced something similar.)
You reach the point where you’re “better,” so everyone assumes you’re healed. Deep down, though, you know there has to be more….
For a while, I simply accepted it.
(Honestly, sometimes it’s okay to pause. Healing does take effort, and there are seasons when we simply need to rest.)
But eventually I realized something important…
I could survive this way.
But I wasn’t thriving.
And deep down…I knew I was created for more.
There Was Another Layer
As I reflected on my own story, and the stories of so many clients I now work with, I noticed something remarkable.
The physical stressors weren’t the whole story.
There was another layer to heal.
Around the same time I was unknowingly living in mold, I was also navigating a relationship and season of life in which I rarely felt emotionally safe.
For years I had learned to…
Keep the peace.
Manage someone else’s emotions.
Ignore my own.
Stay strong.
Push through.
Keep going.
Looking back, I realized my body had spent years quietly living in survival mode.
The mold may have been the spark that ignited my health crisis, but my nervous system had been carrying the weight of chronic stress long before that.
I knew there was another layer to heal.
So I began a new journey – one I wish I had started sooner, though I believe everything happens at the right time.
Learning What Safety Felt Like
I returned to therapy and worked with some incredible practitioners trained in EMDR and somatic therapies. I immersed myself in learning about the nervous system, polyvagal theory, breathwork, trauma-informed care, and the incredible science behind how our bodies respond to safety, stress, and connection.
I also leaned more deeply into my faith and trusting a higher Source more than ever before.
Slowly…
Very slowly…
Everything began to change.
Not because I found another supplement, ordered another lab test, or put myself on a strict protocol….
Those tools absolutely have their place…and I still use them every day in my practice.
But I discovered something I wish everyone struggling with chronic illness knew:
Our bodies are brilliantly designed to heal when they feel safe enough to heal.
I learned to notice emotions instead of ignoring them.
To feel instead of suppress.
To process instead of carry.
To breathe instead of brace.
To become curious instead of critical.
To replace striving with self-compassion.
And, perhaps most importantly…
To love the woman I was becoming.
Over time, I began feeling better than I had in decades!
Ironically, I wasn’t doing more…I was finally learning how to be.
What Healing Looks Like for Me Today
Today, I continue to nourish my body with personalized nutrition, targeted supplementation, movement, sleep, and all of the functional and integrative nutrition principles I teach.
Today, I prioritize creating the internal conditions that allow healing to occur.
It has become the foundation upon which everything else is built.
It isn’t about perfection…it is about:
Intention.
Consistency.
Curiosity.
Grace.
Those small daily choices have become some of the greatest healing tools in my life.
Looking back now, I realize my healing wasn’t about finding one root cause.
It was about uncovering each layer of my story until I could finally create the internal conditions that allowed healing to occur – and truly thrive again.
Because true healing happens when we begin supporting the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.
Today, when a client tells me,
“I’ve tried everything.”
I believe them.
Because I’ve been there.
I know what it feels like to wonder if you’ll ever feel like yourself again.
And I also know what it’s like to discover that healing is still possible.
I am grateful for my own journey, which has led to my current practice style, where I blend functional nutrition, root-cause investigation, nervous system regulation, lifestyle medicine, and compassionate coaching to help people uncover what their bodies truly need to heal.
Many of these foundational principles I share in my free 8-Week Peaceful Gut Education Series, which you’ll receive after completing my complimentary
Gut Health Assessment.
More than anything…
I hope my story reminds you of one simple truth.
There is hope.
Your body is incredibly intelligent…it was designed with an amazing capacity to heal.
